While in New York City this past weekend, I stayed at the Library Hotel. Rated as #1 of 424 hotels in Manhattan on Trip Advisor, I was prepared to have one of my best hotel experiences to date.
Unfortunately, the hotel did not live up to my expectations. Although my stay there was very lovely, it was overpriced given the hotel/room conditions, services rendered, and amenities offered.
This is the review I posted on Trip Adviser:
The rooms are very clean, modern, and themed according to the chosen subject. This means matching themed artwork and of course an excellent book selection. I stayed in the Performing Arts room, which I quite liked.
Room amenities are an in-room safe (too small to fit my laptop), mini bar, nice selection of bathroom products, robe, slippers, 2 complimentary bottles of water, and free wireless Internet access.
I found the Internet connection very very slow and at one time, it stopped working for an hour or so while I was there. (This was no fault of the hotel, but it was very inconvenient at the time as I needed to access some of my tour information online.)
The room was tiny and so was everything in it. I booked a “petite room single” and knew I was getting a single bed, but did not realize how small the room would actually be! As a result, there wasn’t much room for clothing/shoe storage. There was no iron/ironing board in the room. Also, the TV was smaller than my computer monitor at home – maybe 15 inches at the most.
My view was directly into another office building, so the room was dark even during the day.
Outside of the room, the rooftop bar is lovely. I even scored a free glass of wine from the bartender one night. The lounge with the daily wine/cheese selection is amazing – it’s quiet, there’s lots of papers/books available to read, and the wine/food selection is nice.
The hotel staff are very helpful and know lots about the area.
The location of the hotel is great. So close to Grand Central, Times Square, Rockefellar Center etc.
All in all, I had a very nice stay. I just found it very overpriced given the size of the bed, room, lack of view, and other amenities that I have come to expect from other hotels in the same price range.
If you are headed to New York City and wish to stay in a unique boutique hotel and don’t mind paying high prices for a small room, I would highly recommend this hotel.
The next time I visit the big apple, I will not return to the Library Hotel. I am excited to experience what some of the other hotels in the city have to offer.
