Instagramming Szczecin, Poland.

February 18, 2013

A few German friends told me they think of Szczecin as a grim, depressing and ugly place. Despite their negative views of the city, I found Szczecin beautiful in a non-conventional way.

There’s no denying that the carefully restored historical buildings in the Old Town are handsome. The street art scene is not only political but humorous – think of a crotch grabbing Storm Trooper channelling his inner Michael Jackson. The writer in me loved spending hours in their hip and stylish cafes like Cafe Popularna and Brama Jazz Cafe. And the urban grittiness is somehow still appealing to me.

I can’t help it, but I love Szczecin, Poland.

Spending a weekend there last July, I happily walked around the city taking pictures with my iPhone spastically uploading them to Instagram. I just couldn’t stop and can you blame me?

Poland is a religious country, evident by the abundant number of churches and cathedrals.

Szczecin is Poland’s seventh largest city with a population of 407,000 and an important sea port. The naval theme is depicted in various statues and artwork throughout the city.

This also happens to be my favorite Instagram photo from my weekend in Szczecin.

so interesting to see something written about this city… i’ve long desired to go there (partly because the name intrigues me because i have no idea how to say it) and hope to make it sometime. it looks like other people arent as enamored by beauty you have to search a little for…and perhaps that is why they think szczecin is not worth their time. glad to see someone who gave it the chance that it most certainly deserves 🙂

@Megan – Ha ha, it’s a tough name to pronounce, that’s for sure. I do hope you make it there, as it’s a pretty cool city.

Lovely! I met a woman from Szczecin the other weekend and she suggested I visit the city one of these days. It’s on my list!

You got some great shots. Some of them remind me of the Czech Republic, with the colorful town squares and big apartment buildings (panelaky in Czech).

Great photos you have here. A proof that you don’t need to own a DSLR in order to take good shots. Szczecin is a lovely an colorful city – definitely a good destination for travelers. 🙂
